Chapter 8 - Art and Science

Both problematic, art and science, handle a same material but with two different perceptions leading to different truths.

Science will propose a universal truth that will not depend of particular spaces and times. On the contrary, Art will propose sharing particular truths that will never be repeated the same. Artistic truths cannot be repeated the same as they result of the crossing of two cumulated times: The one of the artist and the one of the spectator.

Science and art result of two different internal requirements:

- For the Art internal requirements are feeling, emotion, passions. Problems are the surrounding materials.

- For Science internal requirement is the surrounding material. Problems are mathematic themselves.

Resulting of the work produced in the course of history, these two productions, art and science, and history itself will mutually reveal their authentic meanings.

The first functions of Art : Magical conjuration and Sacred

Similarly to nature that never get old but always renews, death will not be initially perceived by humanity as an ineluctable finality. It will rather appear like a magical accident, whose peculiar circumstances must be warded off. Magical conjuration was most certainly the first form of art.

Customs, collective constructions, legal organisation will give a sense to the group and will form the social links that will unit men forming a common soul. Goethe has defined the Sacred as « What unit souls », such organisations and constructions mean that very link and soul.

Music, the mother to every Arts

In every time and culture, music has been considered as mother to every art. Music makes sizable the inner feeling of souls, but cannot pretend to a separate existence independently of the regularities and rhythms of the surrounding environment.

Poetry is the elder daughter of music and can probably procure the best possible description of realities. Poetry, like cinema, is founded upon the two intellectualised senses, which are view and hearing. It also generates feelings by association of music and images, using, verse, rhythm and oxymora.

The transition towards modern times: Romantic art, the derision of Surrealism and the “mechanical” design

Romantic art aims at enhancing the individual subjectivity of the artist to the detriment of any objective idea or general and absolute principle. The artist himself prevails within the manifestations of romantic art where everything can take part.

Modern art will push even further this process by installing the artist’s subjectivity fully above the content of the work. Everything will depend upon the power of the choice of the artist. Humour also is essential that diverts objects from their original destination, depending fully upon the choices and fantasy of the artist. Derisory works will be proposed, all subjects to comments and judging.

Mechanical arts following sciences will propose a common, universal and Trans-cultural language to societies with a merchandising and industrial purpose.

Design and advertising will achieve the transformation of art into industry.
